Assembling the Panels

With wrong sides together, join squares using sc.

  • Make two rows of 3 squares for the front panel.
  • Join the rows together with sc.
  • Repeat for the back panel.

Gusset

With H hook:

Ch 6.
Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (5 sc). Ch 1, turn.
Sc across, ch 1, turn.

Repeat these rows until the strip is long enough to wrap around both sides and the bottom of the tote plus 9″ — approx. 116 rows.

Fold gusset crosswise to find the center. Align the center of the gusset with the bottom center of the front panel. Pin in place.

Starting at the upper right corner, join with sc around the entire front panel. At the upper left corner, continue across the top edge with sc in each stitch, including 1 sc in every corner space and in each join between squares. Fasten off.

Repeat for the back panel.

Fold the gusset extensions inside the tote and sew down securely.

Handle

With K hook and yarn held double:

Ch 66. Fasten off.
Thread the chain through the gusset extensions. Sew the ends together.
