The moss stitch (also called the linen stitch or granite stitch) creates a beautiful woven texture using only single crochet and chain stitches.

Moss Stitch Crochet Pattern

Foundation Chain

  • Chain an even number of stitches.

Row 1

  1. Single crochet (sc) in the 3th chain from hook.
  2. Chain 1 (ch 1), skip 1 chain.
  3. Sc in next chain, ch 1, skip 1 chain.
  4. Repeat from * to * across the row.
  5. Turn.

Row 2

  1. Ch 2 (counts as first ch-1 space).
  2. Sc in the first ch-1 space.
  3. Ch 1, sc in next ch-1 space.
  4. Repeat from * to * across.
  5. End with a sc in the last ch-1 space.
  6. Turn.

Row 3 and Beyond

  • Repeat Row 2 until your piece reaches the desired length.

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • sk = skip
  • st = stitch

Moss Stitch Formula

  • Starting chain: Even number of chains
  • Pattern repeat: (sc, ch 1) worked into each chain-1 space from the previous row.

Quick Tip

For neat edges:

  • Begin each row with ch 2.
  • Work the final sc into the last ch-1 space of the previous row.
