Crochet Knots Masterclass

Knots are used to decorate a filet mesh. This crochet technique came from Ireland, where it is traditional.

  1. Chain 13, yarn over, insert the hook under the chain you just made. Yarn over again and insert the hook into the same stitch. Repeat this step 4 more times (there should now be 9 loops on the hook).
  2. Yarn over and pull through all the loops on the hook. Then make 1 half double crochet (hdc) into the first of the 3 chain stitches.

Twisted Knot

  1. Pull up one loop — this loop will determine the size of the so-called twisted knot.
  2. Holding the loop in place, yarn over and move the hook first over the loop, then under it.
  3. Pull the yarn back, bringing the hook under the loop.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the pulled-up loop is completely wrapped with yarn.
  5. Yarn over and pull the hook through all the wrapped loops.
  6. Secure the knot with a single crochet (sc) into the last chain stitch before the twisted knot.
  7. The twisted knot can be fastened in various ways (see the instructions for the specific samples).
